Hi,
In my experience, this does not matter to much. I installed both
32 and 64bit versions on a comparable AMD 64 (this one was with
1GB of Ram) and could not find any noticalble speed differences.

To begin with some sort of baseline, I would suggest to see
whether your harddisk ppssibly does not runn at it's speed.

Try 'sudo hdparm -cd /dev/hda' Assuming that you only have one
ide disk. Should you have sata, it might be 'dev/sda' instead.

This asks for 32bit i/o and dma settings, you will find more
information with 'hdparm --help' or 'man hdparm' respectively.

The output should look at least look  somehow similar to this:

eroloff at grey:~$ sudo hdparm -cd /dev/hda
Password:*********

/dev/hda:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
