I would recommend that you print out a copy of Linspire's 
/boot/grub/menu.lst (that is the path in ubuntu and I am assuming it is 
the same with linspire).  That way, you will have enough information to 
manually set up a grub menu option for linspire in ubuntu if there are 
problems. 

Linspire should have a way to shrink the partition it is on, so you 
could have it leave half the drive as free space (or whatever size space

I may be confusing the suse installer with the ubuntu installer, but I 
think you can have it use the free space on the disc.  If not, then you 
will have to manually set ubuntu to use whatever part of the disc you 
made available through linspire.

If you have trouble, there are enough of us dual booting that someone 
should be able to help you get set up. 

Speaking entirely for myself.  As a newbie, it has been wonderful to 
have a dual boot machine.  If you screw one distro up too bad to use, 
you can boot into the other one to beg for help.
