make a research by name in synaptic , search for "totem-" . Among the 
results, you should see totem-xine and totem-gstreamer . One of them is 
installed (at least should be installed).

Case "totem-gstreamer" :
search for "gstreamer0.10-plugins" in synaptic . and install *-bad, 
*-good,*-ugly, *-base

Case "totem-xine" :
install w32codecs and libxine-extracodecs

I recommend in all cases you install w32codecs and I also recommend 
mplayer and vlc
