Problems burning CDs but not DVDs

Hello all,
I've been having some trouble burning CDs for a while now. I think the
trouble started during the upgrade from Breezy to Dapper, but I can't be
sure. I didn't notice the problem until a few months after upgrading, as I
hadn't tried burning a CD during that time. DVDs have burned fine regardless
of whether I was running Breezy or Dapper.

The specific problem is that all user-space programs seem to find the dvd
burner just fine, and will attempt to write to it without problems, but the
drive (and the software using it) will hang for long times without producing
any usefull information. Trying to burn a bin/cue image with the following
command results in the drive being locked for about 10 minutes:

ciasa at raven:~/tmp/Windows 98 SE$ cdrdao write --simulate -v 999 Win98_SE.CUE

and despite what the output [1] says, the process cannot be aborted with
either ctrl-c or ctrl-\.

`cdrecord dev=ATAPI -scanbus` finds the drive OK [2], but burning fails with
the same results [3].

I have tried booting the system with the old hdb=ide-scsi trick, but ubuntu
wouldn't create a /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0 device (like the old 2.4 kernels
would), so cdrecord -scanbus failed to find the drive.

I am at a total loss as to why this is happening. As I have mentioned above,
DVD burning works just fine. I make backups on DVD disks regularly. I have
tried searching google and launchpad hoping someone else has had this
problem, but it seems I'm alone :[

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
