apps on shares

I set up a share to a windows box that i'm currently using for backup
files, etc. I have a tarball on it that i want to read. I can open the
share, but when I click the tarball to read it, I get this error:
Couldn't display "smb://192.168.1.35/usr1%24%
2...up/croatus/breezy/backup.tar.gz"
However, if i copy the tarball to the desktop, I can open it fine.
Is there something I'm missing? Or would the linux programs/apps not be
able to read files stored on a winxp drive?
