First, enable the universe and multiverse repositories.

Once you have enabled the repositories, you can either use the Synaptic
Package Manager or the command line ( Accessories - Terminal )  to install
the codecs. The Terminal is faster, and quite easy - open it and type

sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs

give your password and watch the magic as it downloads and installs ;-)

Synaptic is under "System - Administration" - you will want to browse
there to see the thousands of packages available. It has a search function
as well, and allows installation of whatever you find with a few clicks.
