Umm - I thnk that sailed right over my head...
I just installed mc on my laptop, and

sudo update-alternatives --config editor

showed mcedit as the selected editor. I knew of this because the same
thing happened on my other machines when I installed mc on them.

For example, suddenly "visudo" brought up "mcedit" instead of
"nano" ( notice that one would naturally expect visudo to bring up vi /
vim - but by default on Ubuntu it doesn't, since the alternative for
"editor" is nano by default, which makes for interesting experiences on IRC
help channels...

me: OK , hit escape
newperson: Huh?
me: to save the file and quit the editor type :wq!
newperson: that doesn't work either - what are you smoking?

And so on...
