Dapper upgrade fails

I tried to upgrade to Dapper from Breezy two different ways and neither
worked. The first way:
gksudo "update-manager -d"
The update manager just poped up and indicated everything was up to
date. So I then tried the second way:
set sources.list to dapper and
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This upgraded something, but it didn't boot well. It couldn't mount
some of the NTFS partitions I have setup. Hitting Ctrl-C seemed to get
past the errors, but then the X server wouldn't startup. It looked like
some directories that X needs weren't defined, like font directories and
some others. Not sure why; Breezy ran fine.
