Ignoring unkown interface eth2=eth2

I have an onboard nic, eth0,
built in ipw2200, eth1
and now, I threw in another card, into the pcmcia slot, and it showed up 
under iwconfig as eth2

the weird thing is, I can't do anything with it.  it just returns 
unknown interface eth2=eth2


What does that even mean??  I google around, but it brings up specific 
cases with people's cards and not kind of the general case that I'm 
looking for.

It is an old netgear ma401 card (Prism I)


Its green light blinks at me :-/
