strange indeed.
I have tried it here and canĀ“t reproduce this effect.
$ aptitude show xterm
Package: xterm
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 208-3.1ubuntu1
$ aptitude show vim
Package: vim
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 1:6.4-006+2ubuntu4
What do you have in your config?
~/.Xdefaults ?
Does it also happen, when you start vim with:
$ vim -u NONE <file>
