I've tried FireFTP, and it's ok, but seems to choke on some tasks
(transferring large numbers of files for one).
Also, getting ssl/tls connections to work is a large problem. I haven't
been able to get it to work on these connections at all.
gFTP can be re-compiled for this support, and, if Ubuntu would just
offer gFTP with that compilation, I would recommend it completely, as it
seems to work quite well for everything I tested it for. There's also
IglooFTP, which does work quite well, but I'm not sure it's open source.
lftp works pretty well, but I had a few minor issues testing that one.
ftp command line seems to be the most stable (along with using
Nautilus).
