Java on ubuntu

Interestingly I had this java issue on Ubuntu Warty almost a year ago. 
But with the help of this list, I was able to set up the java 
environment correctly and was pleased with the results. Then I received 
my Breezy CDs and had it installed on another PC. The same issue of the 
correct java environment came up again. I thought that based on my 
experience from Warty I could applied some of it to sort my problem out. 
Alas,

I find that I can't get fakeroot to convert the 
jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin to a deb package so I can install java using 
dpkg - command.
As suggested in the wiki, I tried

DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE=i386-linux fakeroot make-jpkg jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i596.bin
and still it is unsuccessful.

The default java command from the output of the 'update-alternatives 
--config java' command is:

/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/bin/java.

There are no alternatives for the javac command.

Now I had installed java manually under /usr/local and set my JAVA_HOME 
environment
to point to /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_06

This still does not have any effect. i.e I cannot get it to point to 
/usr/local/jkd1.5.0_06/bin/java.

If I set the javac alternatives from the /etc directory, the system 
tells me that there are
no alternatives for javac.

So I in fact have two problems:

1. I cannot install java using the Debian way i.e using fakeroot

2. I cannot get the system to point to the manually installed java 
directory even after the correct environment is set.

It seems that the default Ubuntu installation has precedence over the 
manual installation.

I have downloaded the eclipse software which I am trying to test on the 
platform but so far there is no correct
java environment to enable the testing.

The wiki on java is of some help but unfortunately could not work 
readily for my case although some of the problems
described there applied to my system.

Some input on these would help sort the problem out as was the case when 
I used Warty.

By the way, all the java files are downloaded from the Sun site.
