how to make Modem Monitor monitor the line status?

Hello everyone,

I have set up Ubuntu for the PC of my mother, who still uses an ISDN 
dial up line. I'd like to visualize the status of the line 
(online/offline) with the Gnome Modem Monitor Applet.

Modem Monitor already has got the information, because depending on the 
line status, it enables the menu options "Activate" or "Deactivate". But 
the icon does not change. What am I doing wrong?
