Honest question: if you don't see the nice side of Ubuntu, why are you
planning on switching to it?
Now, to answer. The reasons I left Mandriva for Ubuntu were the will
to try something new, the desire to have a usable distro without
having to configure all of it myself, and the feeling that the
tradeoffs were bigger than the advantages when using Mandriva Cooker.
I'll certainly try the next Mandriva release, but in the meantime
Ubuntu gives me the latest and greatest with much less hassle.
That said, some things aren't the same. Multimedia support by default
is better in mandriva (mp3 support, anyone?) and gstreamer was then
set to a sane default which included gstreamer-dvd to, you know,
actually be able to watch dvds (yes, libdvdcss notwhitstanding) on
gnome's default player: totem.
Cheers!
