For all those who would like to avoid the b0rked fonts when upgrading, I have
a work-around:
What I ended up doing was using Adept for the first time, & holding back
the 'kde-guidance' pkg. I also used the 'Safe Upgrade' option. The result
was the fonts are unscathed when one reboots (the new kernel was included in
my upgrade) or otherwise restarts KDE.
