Thanks for ideas, but I have absolutely no way of knowing whether
xorg.conf is specifying things correctly. After all, I didn't mess it
up; the Dapper install did.
I tried to enter this problem as a bug on launch pad, but when I tried
to submit it I kept getting this pink error message which told me
nothing, so I gave up. Hopefully, I can get it sorted out via this
list in the next few day; otherwise I will have no choice but to
reinstall Breezy and wait for the official release in June.

Ah... I think that may have been pilot error. I tried just now and it
seemed to have worked, however, the system still stopped at the same
place; when it tried to switch into graphics mode. I am not sure what
I am supposed to be able to do in single mode. Is this like the Fedora
rescue mode which dumps you in a terminal at the end?
