For more than you ever wanted to know about apt:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/index.en.html

Or you can type

apt-cache search apt-howto

and choose a language version to install - for instance

sudo apt-get install apt-howto-en

Derek will tell you to use " sudo aptitude install apt-howto-en " (which
does the same thing, but smarter) ;-)

Once it installs, typing

apt-howto

in a terminal will open the document ( the same as the document in the URL
I gave above) for you in a browser ( firefox by default in Ubuntu )

Then bookmark the document in your browser, either way, and you can refer
to it for specific help on using apt. If you install the package as above,
it will always be available to you locally, even off-line, of course.
