Hello Dick,
What you said was "...You're implying the ubuntu makes up a secret
password at install time, and that's not the case." I was not implying
anything of the kind. Perhaps in the future it would be more helpfull
if you simply asked my source. That is a completely legitimate thing to
ask. You can certainly argue with the source and it's validity. Or you
could simply ask why I don't just point the person asking the question
(Facundo in this case) to the source and let them read it for
themselves and ask questions. That's perfectly legitimate too. After
all that's what most of us have done and it helps everyone in the
learning process. What you did though was twist what I said for the
purpose (it seemed to me) of sarchasm. That is not helpfull. I was
simply following the wiki (which now has been updated). Originally when
I read it, it said "By default, _the_password_ for root is locked in
Ubuntu." Here is the link and the record of the change
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo?action=diff
So, in reading the wiki, I came to the conclusion I came to which was
posted in my "original" reply to Facundo. Now it says "By default,
_the_root_account_ is locked in Ubuntu." (Underlines added) This is
much more clear, and I would assume changed due to our heated
discussions. Any reasonable person would see how I came to my
conclusion. I am glad that the wiki was changed to reflect a more
accurate explanation. It IS the root _account_ that is locked at
install (not the password) and not unlocked until you give it a
password.
I have not been using linux for 30 years, but one does not need to have
done so to understand. I started with Commodore 64 and have used every
flavor of Windows, DOS and OS/2. I'm also a former network
administrator. All that's required is patience, time, and effort to
learn it, and occasionally someone to point you in the right direction,
and not use sarchasm or belittling to make a point.
