not really an answer to your questions, but i like M0n0wall as
a firewall, see here : http://www.m0n0.ch/wall/

you can install it on a hard-disc or CF-card, but also use a combination
of only cdrom + floppy

installation is quite easy, and the web-interface works very well (also
in lynx via ssh)
