Answering my own post just in case it may help someone else: "Does
anyone know a way to force gnome applications to use kprinter?"

Start sudo kprinter in a terminal.

Choose "Add a printer", and install a printer as usual for your
situation.

o When asked for a Printer Name and Location, I chose Kdraft for a
Draft (low resolution) name, select desired dpi for resolution, and for
a location "Network". These names can be anything you want and easy to
remember.

  o Select "Finish"

Then:

repeat the process as above and select another name such as
"Knormal" (Normal resolution)

Then:

repeat the process as above and select another name such as
"Kphoto" (High resolution)

Both Gnome and KDE applications will now provide the user with the
kdeprinter printer dialogue when requesting to print from the running
application.

The Network printer used at our company happens to be an HP Design Jet
860C, and protocol used for access is TCP. HP Direct protocol woks as
well. IPP protocol was found to be troublesome and somewhat erratic as
our experience and was abandoned.

Dapper Drake updated daily, is the operating system for all of the above
discussions.
