Installing libmtp

I have a Creative Zen MicroPhoto that I would like to get
working with Linux. After a little searching, I found out
about Gnomad 2.8.3 which has experimental support for the
Zen using MTP mode.

Well, Gnomad needs libmtp. Following the directions at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=895989, I am able
to download the source for libmtp, but I'm having trouble
getting it configured and compiled.

I ran ./autogen, and as far as I know this step worked
(what it was supposed to do, I don't know).
Then I ran ./configure and got the following error:
C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check.

I tried different setting the CC environment variable to
different values, but no matter what I pick, I get errors
(even when using the version specified by the command
gcc --version).

All I want to do is read some recordings I have stored
on the MP3 player. I don't even need write access at this
point. Any suggestions?

Jacob
