Playing streaming NPR?

I was just wondering what people used to play streams such as the 24hour 
"NPR Program Stream" that's on the frontpage of npr.org?

I've gotten mplayer to handle it.... barely.... it turns black for at 
least a couple of minutes before it starts playing and even then it is 
jittery and choppy.  (It feels like a Windows 3.1 program honestly :-/ )

Rythmbox, etc don't seem to be able to handle it. 


What is the preferred application, or most working application for 
dealing with streams like this?
