GNOME menu bar moved suddenly

On further exploration, I just learned that if I middle-click (the
button with the scroll wheel) on the menu bar, the cursor turns to a
fist, and I can move the bar back to the top.
As for whether this was caused by my cheapo optical mouse or the fact
that I use "throwaway" systems that other folks have upgraded from...
well, maybe.
