There was a bug recently in update-notifier where the subprocess
responsible for checking for updates would crash, resulting in you never
seeing the icon.

If you "apt-get update && apt-get install update-notifier", the newer
update-notifier should pop up an icon nearly instantly, telling you
about all the other pending updates.
