Actually it is  " build-essential " ( singular)

This crops up a lot, and isn't necessarily such a problem if you are using
synaptic to search for the package, but 

sudo aptitude install build-essentials
 (or apt-get install of course )

will spit out an error
E: Couldn't find package build-essentials
