Yes, kubuntu, ubuntu or edubuntu are all linux based systems.

Depending on the use make of WinXP you will be able to replace your use
of WinXP by edubuntu. That would involve using some different programs
than the ones you use with WinXP but that have, sort of, the same
functionality.

One very good way to try these systems is to make use of the "live" CDs,
with one of these you can load a Kubuntu or Ubuntu system from a CD and
try it *without* having to install it on your computer.

You can get live CDs for Kubuntu here:
http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php

and for Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download

There are no live CDs for edubuntu available, trying any one of the
other two will give you a good idea about the system.
