Removing usplash while using vesafb console (dapper)

if you remove vga= from the arguments to the kernel, you will not get
any framebuffer and your text should just flow.
see if you are in the right console at boot. i believe ubuntu switches
to tty8 very early at boot to avoid all the text printed in tty1.
thus, you see a blank screen.
