I think Adam's point is that you are lacking the "restricted modules" -
which would be pulled in by the "linux-686" package.
The linux-image -* and linux-686 packages are different beasts :)
For instance , from "apt-cache show linux-686" on breezy:
Source: linux-meta
Version: 2.6.12.16
Depends: linux-image-686, linux-restricted-modules-686
