Dapper 6 - NVidia card and 686 kernel

On Ubuntu 5.10, this combination worked well - NVidia go5200 and a
2.8Ghz P4 processor.

Under Dapper 6, I install the base OS, upgrade to the linux-image "686"
package, reboot (OS still runs fine at this point). Install nvidia-glx
packages, enable the nvidia X driver, restart X, and no more video. I
get the generic "your video card isn't working so X didn't start"
message.

Is this a known broken thing, or is there a workaround?
