Emacs21 not receiving danish chars for input

Hello,
I am experiencing a problem with emacs21 after dist-upgrading from
breezy to dapper. My emacs buffers will no longer respond to key presses
on the danish chars æ,ø and å. All other applications work as expected
and xev shows the correct key event information.
`view-lossage' in emacs does not show any response to the key events
ether.

I am using a custom xmodmap but the problem is reproducible
with /usr/share/xmodmap/xmodmap.dk
