If it does remove it, dont worry, ubuntu-desktop
is there just to pull other packages, it does not
provide functionallity by itself.
You will not loose gnome. Kde will be default though.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop will put gnome
back as default but will not remove kde.
