Thanks!! The chmod 777 did work, however I can't seem to see that group
in the 'users & groups' admin screen.  The group is 'disk' but it's not
in the groups list.  Strangely, if I go by user then in the dropdown for
the primary group I DO see 'disk' listed.  (But of course don't want to
make 'disk' the primary group..

Anyway it works so I can use it now.   (Anyone any ideas about why not
all groups are listed in the admin panel?)
