ubuntu install under VMware workstation

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and make sure that you deselect the "use framebuffer"? option offered early 
on...

it's exactly the same as you would do on a normal install if the same thing 
happened. (I've made this mistake before by selecting the framebuffer 
support)
