Yes, it works as a drop in replacement, more or less.  It also has an
interactive mode.  You should read /usr/share/doc/aptitude/README.

It removes what you ask it to, plus anything you installed with it
implicitly (as a dependency).

I don't know why aptitude isn't generally taught instead of apt-get.
