Clone mode on an IBM T42 (ATI Radeon 9600)

Hi there.

Using fglrx, I can get accelerated X on my laptop, no problems. I can
switch to the "radeon" driver easily enough too, and everything
continues to work, altpough without 3D etc. I do have to power cycle the
laptop, but I don't mind that.

However, I want the screen display to appear on an external monitor.
With the "radeon" driver, that happens. With the "fglrx" driver, nada.
Nothing happens on the external monitor at all. Fn-F7 has no effect with
either driver.

The ATI contol program fglrx-control appears to work, but doesn't. That
is, I can use it to set up (say) clone mode, but when I restart X as it
asks me to, the setting is back at the default. With the "radeon"
driver, of course, the ATI control program doesn't do much at all :-)

I get the feeling I am missing some obvious and simple thing. FAQs and
the various how-tos have been interesting, but typically are related to
doing MUCH more than I want to do, which is simply see the same image on
an external monitor as my laptop screen displays.

Any ideas?

Regards, K.
