How to change the default text editor ?

If that doesn't help, then try

$ EDITOR=nano

Looking at $EDITOR and $VISUAL environment variables is a long-standing
tradition, and svn may observe it.

Incidentally, I tried

# apt-get install subversion

but copped

WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
  db4.2-util libsvn0 subversion
Install these packages without verification [y/N]? y
Media change: please insert the disc labeled
 'Ubuntu 5.10 _Breezy Badger_ - Release i386 (20051012)'
in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter

I must lok at that later.
