libXdmgreet.so missing

I've been searching for 2 days because this problem.  I can't find much
documentation on it.  



Looks like there was a bug logged here:

and i was able to install a fixed working version of xdm from here:

http://cmeerw.org/debian/



What a pain to find.  I wish problems like these were documented
better, and if they are, can someone advise where to look?  I'm pretty
new to Ubuntu.
