To be fair, it should be noted that AMD were originally going to call
their 64-bit-extended x86 instruction set "x86-64", an eminently
sensible and descriptive name that would have caused a lot less
confusion. Intel might even happily have used that name.

I suspect that the AMD marketing lizards got to it, though, and it was
renamed "AMD64", which name obviously Intel would never use, even
though it swallowed its pride and copied AMD's extended instruction
set.

I believe that Linus Torvalds liked AMD's attitude and their boldness
in extending the x86 ISA this way, so he himself adopted the AMD64
nomenclature - so the blame for this confusion could be placed at
Linus' door.

Personally, I think that x86-64 is a much more informative description.
