Intel hda sound help - where is alsaconf

I've got an intel 915 based board with the on-board sound (ALC860 - Realtek
High Definition thingamajig). I'm running Breezy (I know...I should be
running Hoary...).
I've read and re-read various threads and the HOWTO on the subject. Here is
my situation:
I've updated my installation so that the latest alsa packages are installed
(1.0.9). I've run the mixer and made sure the levels are up. I still get no
sound. Funny thing is, I can't run ./configure or alsaconf (but I CAN run
the alsamixer). It can't seem to find the programs (and neither can I by
searching my filesystem). Does installing the packages via synaptic NOT get
all the required programs?
I've also tried 'modprobe snd-hda-intel' and it tells me that it can't find
the module - which was totally UNsurprising to me at this point. ;)
Going to the sound control applet in the menus shows 'Intel hda' as my sound
device, but of course there is no sound. And all the instructions I read
talk about running alsaconf to configure the sound card however I can't find
that program.
As you can easily tell, I'm a newbie at Linux, but eager to learn.
Any ideas on how to proceed or what other info I should be posting?
