Kernel 386 installed instead of 686

I don't know about anyone else, but I run a Pentium 4 (1.6 Ghz), and the
386 kernel actually runs FASTER than 686, I use the 386 almost
exclusively. I can't say for sure why this is, but I'm guessing that it
has something to do with some module I'm using being compiled against
386, and only working when I use that.
If anyone can actually tell me for sure why this is, it'll make my day :D
