In that case it sounds like you valume levels are muted for oss sound
or alsa. check on the volume control in gnome if wave and master are
enabled and turned up, check for alsa and oss by selecting the
different devices from the menu.

(And sorry in advnce if this was the first thing you tried... :D )

If no joy there then try turning off soud events - some people have
problems when its enabled due to a lack of hardware mixer (this is
fixed i think in breezy using dmix - which version of ubuntu are you
using?)
