If you use the Ubuntu repositoryś skype it hangs or if you download
the last one (1.2.0.17) from skype.com it also hangs.
If you use the old one 1.2.0.11 no problem for me. You can also work
around the problem as Eamonn Sullivan did.
So we have discussed it, but once more for "Forum Post" (-:

start up. That's on a 2.4Ghz Celeron with a gigabyte of RAM. Also, the
last time I tried to install the deb (either by downloading it or
Skype's repository in my sources.list), I get a complaint about a
missing dependency. (I'm at work now, but it's a libqt-mt dependency

Here is the potential error. Do not use the last update 1.2.0.17 but only
1.2.0.11 (through wget and dpkg -i) and you get no problems. The start-up
time still takes 45 secunds, but function very well.
The 1.2.0.17 has no practical update anyway.
