There are plenty of other distros where you have to make many
decisions for everything ... and in fact, Debian (upon which Ubuntu is
based) requires more decisions and knowledge to configure. You get a
tiny taste of that if you choose the "custom" installation when
installing Ubuntu -- it will leave you with a very bare-bones linux
installation.
One thing I LIKE about Ubuntu is that the maintainers ARE making
reasonable decisions so it's easy to get up and running. The decisions
won't please everyone, but nobody is saying you can't change it. And
of course you can always try Debian or Gentoo or whatever suits you
best.
And finally, Ubuntu has been widely built upon, so there are several
redistributions with DIFFERENT choices made. I'm thinking of Kubuntu
and Edubuntu specifically, but they give you the pieces so you can
make your own.... maybe (since your email says your name is "Bo") call
it "Bo-buntu"? (grin!)
ALL THAT SAID, I think this thread may have moved off topic for this
list. Thanks to all for the reasoned discussion!
