Slower Firefox page loading on Ubuntu v. Windows

Firefox is slow on my pc in other ways. For instance when I click new
tab while a second tab is loading a webpage. Generally speaking most
actions are lagging while a web page is loading in a tab (even clicking
a bookmark "folder"  and selecting bookmark to load in a second tab.
This does not occur in XP.

I dont know if firefox or Gnome is responcible for this behaviour...
