every kernel-update breaks my installation

Mine works fine.  What exactly you need to edit to make it work?

You can make this automatically every time by following the instructions
found in the "/boot/grub/menu.lst" in the section that start with "####
BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST".
