well I think you should start getting used to apt. apt-cache is for querying,
apt-get is for installing. don't forget to apt-get update before anything. I
think the gtk toolkit and qt are available from the ubuntu repositories.
on .deb based systems every software is easy: or you have the dependencies and
then it is easy to install, or you don't and you can't install. if you need
more software, you'll need to add entries to the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
for the modem i think you can use the sl-modem-daemon package, though don't
ask me how.
