Strange colours problem on iBook

Most times (at least 90%) when I boot my iBook (Kubuntu - Hoary) I get
screwed up colours in X (ftp://ftp.sr.bham.ac.uk/pub/sjt/img2309.jpg).
On hitting ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the server and restart it the
colours come right (ftp://ftp.sr.bham.ac.uk/pub/sjt/img2310.jpg). I
don't know if this is a timing issue in Xorg or a sign of incipient
failure in the graphics card. It's definitely not a simple colour
swapping (e.g. displaying BGR instead of RGB).

Any clues?
