Running as Root

Ubuntu is  GREAT !  Much better and easier to use and maintain than RH9
I was running before.

One question. When I installed Ubuntu it did NOT ask me for a password
for the ROOT user, thusly I can not run "SU" from within my username NOR
can I logon as Root when I need to do a lot of administrative functions.

How can I determine the default password, and change it ?
