GnuPG encryption suddenly not working

I've only noticed this with one of the people in my GnuPG
keyring, but I can't encrypt to that person anymore. He
can't encrypt to me, either. He's using Debian, and I'd have
to assume he's tracking sid; I'm using Ubuntu, tracking
Breezy. Presumably some recent package in sid (which also
made its way into Breezy) broke GnuPG.

There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to encrypt to him.
His key is listed in my keyring:

	(22:41) slaniel at TheloniousMonk:~$ gpg --list-keys kessel
	pub 1024D/4950EAA6 2002-09-22 [expires: 2007-10-04]
uid Adam Kessel <adam at bostoncoop.net>
uid Adam Kessel (Main GPG Key) <ajkessel at alumni.princeton.edu>
uid Adam Kessel (Primary e-mail location) <adam at bostoncoop.net>
uid Adam Kessel (Work e-mail for Fall 2002) <kessel at epic.org>
uid Adam Kessel <kessel.a at neu.edu>
uid Adam Kessel (Formerly at EPIC in Fall 2002) <kessel at epic.org>
uid Adam Kessel <adam at rosi-kessel.org>
uid Adam Kessel (Debian Developer Address) <ajkessel at debian.org>

but if I try to email him in mutt, mutt asks for his keyID
-- even though it's had no problem getting the keyID
automatically before now. If I run gpg from the command
line, I get this:

(22:43) slaniel at TheloniousMonk:~$ gpg --encrypt foo
You did not specify a user ID. (you may use "-r")

	Current recipients:
	2048g/34FFE5BB 2003-03-04 "Stephen R Laniel <slaniel at laniels.org>"

Enter the user ID. End with an empty line: 4950EAA6
	No such user ID.

whereas that keyID is most certainly in the keyring.

What happened?
