EDITING SOURCES LIST

Recently I tried editing my sources.list and got the
following message:

The document could not be saved, as it was not
possible to write to file:///etc/apt/sources.list.
Check that you have write access to this file or that
enough disk space is available.

How do I get administrator privileges on my system? I
am the ONLY user of this machine.
